is love real, or a ghost that haunts us?

because to bring meaning to our whole lives,
we’ll search our whole lives.
lifeless flesh;
sellouts and fakers;
waiting for someone to make us whole.

and one way or another,
we’ll get tired of our failure
and, in desperate self-deception
we’ll get married with starry eyes
as though putting on the play of our dreams,
and ignoring the doubts
in our peripheral vision

and could this really happen to us?
and did we sell out? did we fake it?
because decades later,
we find in old age, vacant........

that our lover is a stranger

and we are alone
